با استفاده از شیلد Sim900 و قرار دادن آن روی برد آردوینو می توان از تمامی امکانات GPRS استفاده نمود. همچنین قابلیت ارسال و دریافت sms و برقراری تماس نیز امکان پذیر می باشد که البته با داشتن سوکت هدفون و میکروفون برقراری تماس ساده تر خواهد بود.
شیلد شامل 12 GPIO، دو PWM و مبدل آنالوگ به دیجیتال می باشد. هسته مرکزی این شیلد پردازنده تک چیپ AMR926EJ-S می باشد که امکان ایجاد ارتباط SMS, MMS, GPRS و صدا را از طریق UART و کامند های AT فراهم آورده است. جریان مصرفی این شیلد در حالت Sleep Mode بسیار کم و حدود 1.5 میلی آمپر می باشد.

The Arduino GSM shield allows an Arduino board to connect to the internet, send and receive SMS, and make voice calls using the GSM library.
The shield will work with the Arduino Uno out of the box. The shield will work with the Mega, Mega ADK, Yun, and Leonardo boards with a minor modification. The GPRS Shield is based on the SIM900 module from SIMCOM and compatible with Arduino and its clones. The GPRS Shield provides you a way to communicate using the GSM cell phone network. The shield allows you to achieve SMS, MMS, GPRS, and Audio via UART by sending AT commands (GSM 07.07,07.05 and SIMCOM enhanced AT Commands). The shield also includes the 12 GPIOs, 2 PWMs and an ADC of the SIM900 module(They are all 2V8 logic) present onboard. SIM900 is designed with a very powerful single-chip processor integrating AMR926EJ-S core. It is based upon a mature and field-proven platform, backed up by our support service, from definition to design and production.
